We have designed a greenway system (Panel1), which is managed for public recreation and slow travel (footpath and bikeway) between Chodová Planá (Kuttenplan) and its small villages: Bonenov, Dolní Kramolín, Holubín, Michalovy Hory, Pístov, Výškov and Výškovice (Wischkowitz). Greenways are useful in conservation, management of cultural heritage and health promotion. The greenway system is a well-designed net of existing natural values and cultural heritage. The greenway will have its own character not only by the present aptitudes but the newly designed outdoor furniture (made from local materials) as well. We have designed 4 different character areas of the greenway system, as the urban, forest, grassland and waterfront section. Using the greenway system people can easily reach nearby villages in nature. For locals the greenway provides places for remembering and meeting and for tourists it helps to discover the local landscape and farmland. We have designed footpaths and bike routes as part of the system. By definition, in a greenway system the bikeways should be separated from carways, but in this particular case, we have used the existing roads mostly as bikeways as well because many of these roads have low use by few inhabitants. The system can be easily supplemented and spread even in a wider area around Chodová Planá, connecting more areas and villages this way.

Plan 1 (pdf) | Documentation (pdf)

We have examined the village itself, looked at its architectural & landscape values, existing conflicts, current state of vegetation, and have reviewed stakeholders. Based on this, we created a plan for the village itself, and chose place for our land art proposal (Panel2). We created our design in layers. Our main goal is to preserve the still visible traces of the past – first layer. The next level is the present. The biggest value from this time is the vegetation, that has not stopped growing when people left. Succession is always present, and we would like to protect the natural areas around the village. At last, we added a new layer to the area, as a future layer. The greenway is partly taking place on the old roads: the bikeway is on the old carway, and there is a footpath going north, on the traces of the old, disappearing road. We would like to supplement this with a new footpath, along the stream. We introduce new future elements to the landscape as well: “Goethe stones”, placed around Výškovice, with poetry from Goethe written on them, both in Czech and German language and the land art for gathering, remembering. By all this, we also introduce a very important new element of the landscape: people. We expect locals, descendants and tourists to come and use the greenway and the event space in Výškovice, to discover and learn from it, and to bring life to the landscape.

Plan 2 (pdf)

Our land art (Panel3) is a tool for receiving information from locals, descendants and tourists, through inviting them to express their wishes to Výškovice. This way we will have positive, supportive suggestions and impressions about the village.

The installation itself is a 3,5 m high metal structure, with plastic labels hanging down from a 20×20 cm grid, placed on the top of the structure. The height of the labels is between 1,35-2,35cm – based on the terrain of Výškovice – to allow people to write on them, read other wishes, and to walk “inside” the installation. We chose a part of the stream’s valley, and used the inverse of it, to draw a beautiful texture – “sky”.

We placed a wooden structure around the installation, to protect it and to provide shade and shelter for visitors. The installation inside later can be removed, and the wooden structure can be used in several ways in the future: as a shelter, a gathering place, a place for events, concerts, or exhibitions.

We suggest using the area around the land art as a place for volunteering camps in the future. Every year there could be an event, where architects, landscape architects, sociologists, artists, etc. gather, and work together for Výškovice: they can build new installations, clean Heracleum, etc. This can be a tradition, which can bring about better communication between locals and visitors.
